Letting Go

For as long as I can remember, I’ve tried to control every situation and everything around me. Only recently did I come to understand that this need for control was rooted in fear. I was afraid things wouldn’t unfold the way I thought they should, so I worked tirelessly to manage every outcome—rather than simply allowing life to happen. What I didn’t realize was that in doing so, I was actually standing in the way. I was blocking the natural flow of life and all the beautiful opportunities and gifts the universe was trying to send my way.
Everything changed in October 2024, when I received an unexpected invitation to spend the weekend with a friend who had recently moved to Wilmington, NC. Normally, I would have found a reason not to go—the drive was long, and I was used to saying no. But something in me said yes. And I’m so glad I did. It turned out to be one of the most joyful weekends I’d experienced in the four years since my husband-equivalent transitioned to the other side.
That weekend opened my eyes. I began to wonder how many other moments I had missed by clinging to control. So, I made a decision: I would start saying “yes” to every opportunity that came my way. Since then, life has never been the same. I wake up each day with a sense of excitement, eager to discover what new experiences await.
If you want to understand the life-changing power of surrender, I highly recommend The Surrender Experiment by Michael A. Singer. It beautifully captures the magic that unfolds when we let go and trust the flow of life.
